Accent lighting is one of three types of recessed downlights, along with general downlighting and wall wash luminaires. Typically adjustable and specified with a narrow to medium beam spread, accent lighting is used to highlight specific surfaces including tabletops and artwork while also bringing form to furniture and architectural features. Accent + Decorative
Decorative fixtures can add soft ambient glow or even a sparking feature to the composition of a restaurant space. By adding an additional layer of carefully aimed adjustable accent lights, one can perceive the decorative pendant as the apparent source of light, while the accents highlight the tabletop. This additional layer of light provides form and dynamic sparkle to silver and glassware, that could otherwise render flat. Accent lighting can also reflect from table surface providing soft ambient upward glow to patrons faces, creating an intimate dinning experience.

Grazing
Wall grazing effects can be achieved by placing narrow beam accent fixtures close to a vertical surface. This grazing approach can reveal rich textures in wall materials. Increasing space between fixtures creates high contrast between sources creating drama and visual lure. Columns also provide a great lighting opportunity. Placing accents on either side of a column captures the strongest form.

Artwork
Aside from wall washing, accent lighting is the most common approach for artwork lighting. Adjustable accents highlight artwork individually while wall washing highlights full vertical surface as a feature wall, ceiling to floor. Accenting artwork successfully requires more precision and understanding of specific placement and dimensions of artwork. A mockup to determine appropriate spacing from wall along with field- changeable diffusion lenses help ensure successful outcome.
